Ogura E/M products are also used in several convenience, or accessory, applications. These applications may be for driver comfort and control, or maybe even for vehicle performance is specific situations. In the applications shown here they are all used at the discretion of the vehicle operator, and in some cases they provide not only convenience, but also passenger or user safety.
Steer by Wire
The steer by wire application is a ‘reverse’ clutch in that when energized, rather than provide a mechanical connection withiun the steer column, it actually disconnects the mechanical system, allowing the vehicle to switch over to electronic steering control. With this design, should the vehicle every lose it’s electrical power, for whatever reason, the steer by wire clutch, when de-energized, will allow reconnection of the mechanical steering column to provide safe vehicle control.
Sliding Door / Rear Hatch Clutch
As a convenience to the vehicle driver and passengers many automobiles today include an automatic rear hatch lift mechanism or automatic sliding side door mechanism. Both of these provide a convenience to the users, but at the same time there is a safety issue involved. Should the closing mechanism become overtorqued due to something in the closing path, the clutch will stop the closing action as a safety item.
